Abu Dhabi’s Future is Driverless: Robotaxi Fleet Expands Across the Capital

The skyline isn't the only thing evolving in Abu Dhabi. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility, has officially announced a massive expansion of its autonomous vehicle network, bringing the future of urban travel to three major new districts: Khalifa City, Masdar City, and Rabdan.

This move marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s journey toward a sustainable, tech-driven transport ecosystem. Building on the success of pilot programs launched in 2021, the expansion ensures that driverless technology is no longer just a "test" but a core part of the city’s infrastructure.

New Routes, Iconic Landmarks

One of the most exciting updates is the introduction of dedicated routes connecting the Abu Dhabi Corniche directly to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This allows tourists and residents to travel between the city’s scenic waterfront and its most famous architectural marvel in a fully autonomous vehicle.

The service now covers a comprehensive map of the capital, including:

  • New Zones: Khalifa City, Masdar City, and Rabdan.

  • Established Zones: Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island, and Zayed International Airport.

Powered by Global Giants

The commercial operation of these Robotaxis is a collaborative effort between global autonomous technology leader WeRide and ride-hailing giant Uber. Local fleet operations are managed by Tawasul Transport, ensuring that cutting-edge AI meets local expertise.

Passengers can book these rides directly through the Uber app. Since its inception, the service has seen a nearly 150% growth in trips (as of 2025), maintaining a staggering 99.9% safety rate.

Smart Mobility for a Sustainable Future

The expansion was announced during the Unmanned Systems Exhibition (UMEX) 2026, underscoring Abu Dhabi’s commitment to "Smart Mobility." By shifting toward electric, autonomous vehicles, the ITC aims to:

  • Reduce Carbon Emissions: Contributing to the UAE’s Green Agenda.

  • Enhance Efficiency: Using AI to optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion.

  • Improve Quality of Life: Offering a seamless, high-tech alternative to traditional commuting.

How to Ride

Getting a Robotaxi is as simple as ordering a standard ride.

  1. Open the Uber app in a supported area.

  2. Select UberX or Uber Comfort.

  3. If an autonomous vehicle is nearby, you’ll be matched! (You can also opt-in for autonomous rides specifically in your app settings).
